Supporting Mental Health Through Digital Accessibility
Project Background
In many rural and urban areas, individuals experiencing mental health challenges face significant barriers in accessing timely and appropriate care. Existing systems for tracking patient visits are often manual, fragmented, and lacking structured follow-up, making it difficult for volunteers and professionals to provide consistent support.
This project aimed to design a mental health visit tracking application that could streamline the recording of patient sessions, monitor progress, and ensure continuity of care — all while being easy to use for both professionals and volunteers.
Why the Team Did This
The main motivation was to create a centralized, accessible, and user-friendly platform that would:
Provide a clear history of patient visits, including whether the session was a follow-up or an initial consultation.
Help volunteers quickly understand patient context and track emotional or psychological developments over time.
Offer tools for self-assessment so users can check their mental health condition before seeking help.
Reduce the administrative burden of manual note-taking and scattered records.
Challenges in the Process
Designing the visit history was more complex than simply listing dates. The information needed to be presented chronologically, concisely, and in a way that remained emotionally sensitive. The challenge was to help volunteers and professionals grasp the patient’s progress at a glance.
Solutions We Designed
Visit Timeline View
A chronological step-based layout showing each visit, date, and reported issue (e.g., 17 May 2025 – excessive anxiety, 16 May 2025 – excessive anxiety, 15 May 2025 – feelings of emptiness). This gives volunteers instant context on recent developments.

Follow-up Visit Indicator
Each visit record displays whether it’s a follow-up from a previous session or a first-time consultation, helping volunteers understand the continuity of care.

Mental Health Check
An interactive self-assessment tool where users answer guided questions about their mood, behavior, and physical symptoms. Based on responses, the system provides a gentle summary of possible mental health concerns and suggests whether the user should seek professional help.
